I once came across a simple but piercing sentence:

“They don’t have to ruin you. They just have to ruin the idea of you.” It stayed with me.

How fragile our reputations are! A single remark, a careless whisper, can reshape how others see us. You might set a boundary in service, decline a request, or voice a different opinion—and suddenly the label appears: “She’s difficult.” “He’s insincere.” “They’re not cooperative.”

Once such an idea is planted, it spreads quietly. Even those who have never witnessed anything themselves may begin to carry the impression. Neutral actions get reinterpreted through the lens of that label, and the shadow of reputation can feel heavier than the truth of who we are.

Our minds are wired to pay more attention to danger than to accuracy. It is a survival instinct. In the ancient world, mistaking a stick for a snake was a false alarm, but mistaking a snake for a stick could be fatal. So the brain learned to err on the side of caution. That same reflex still plays out in modern life.

When someone says, “Be careful with her,” the mind does not treat it as neutral information—it sounds an inner alarm. We do not always stop to ask, “Is it true?” We simply think, “Better to stay safe.” It feels easier to believe a warning than to question it. And once that seed of suspicion is planted, the mind quietly starts collecting “proof”.

We remember the few moments that seem to match the warning and overlook everything that does not. Psychologists call this confirmation bias—we search for evidence that fits what we already believe.

Another trick of the mind is to mistake behaviour for character. If someone refuses a request because they are tired, we may decide, “She’s selfish.” Psychology calls this attribution error—we explain other people’s actions by who we think they are rather than considering what they may be going through.

That is how ordinary, neutral actions become reinterpreted through the lens of a label. And because negative impressions feel more urgent, they also travel easily. Even silence can help them along. People who doubt a story may simply not want to become involved, yet their silence can be mistaken for agreement. Before long, perception begins to acquire the weight of reality.

When Perception Becomes an Offence

This challenge of perception is not new. Sacred literature has long recognised how envy and manipulation can distort vision.

The Caitanya-bhagavata recounts how a brahmana named Gopala Capala grew envious of Srivasa Thakura, whose home was at the heart of Lord Chaitanya’s sankirtana gatherings. Unable to oppose Srivasa openly, Gopala resorted to deception. One night, he placed ritual items outside Srivasa’s door to create the impression that this respected Vaishnava was secretly engaged in practices contrary to his professed conduct.

His intention was to fabricate hypocrisy—to make a saintly person appear insincere and turn public respect into doubt. Gopala did not need to prove that Srivasa was a hypocrite. He only needed to plant the possibility in other people’s minds. The rest could be carried by suspicion itself.

The story ends severely. Gopala Capala was struck with leprosy, and when he later approached Lord Chaitanya begging for deliverance, Mahaprabhu directed him to seek forgiveness from Srivasa himself. The offence had been committed against a Vaishnava, and it had to be addressed where it had been committed.

There is something sobering in this pastime. Deliberately distorting another person’s character is not merely an unpleasant social act. In the Vaishnava tradition it carries spiritual consequence because it involves what belongs to the heart: envy, malice, pride and the willingness to injure another person in the eyes of others. Gopala Capala could not diminish Srivasa’s actual character, so he tried to diminish the way that character was perceived.

When Our Identity Feels Threatened

But the story raises another question, and perhaps this is the more difficult one. What happens when we are the person being misrepresented?

There is a natural desire to put things right. If something untrue has been said, we want the truth known; if our motives have been misunderstood, we want to explain them. And sometimes a false impression does need to be corrected, particularly when it affects others, damages service or creates consequences beyond ourselves. But there is a fine line between protecting integrity and protecting identity.

This is where ahankara, false ego, becomes relevant in a very practical way. False ego is not simply pride. It is also our identification with the constructed self: who we think we are, who we want to be, and importantly, who we need others to believe we are. Perhaps this is why a damaged reputation can hurt so deeply. It is not always the practical consequence that causes the greatest pain, but the thought that someone now believes something about us that is not true.

And then the mind becomes occupied with correcting the picture.

And here lies the irony: another person may have created a false image of us, but in fighting that image we can become equally attached to the image we want them to have. We begin trying to control something that has never been completely within our control—another person’s mind.

Bhakti does not ask us to become careless about our conduct. Quite the opposite. Character matters, trust matters, and reputation matters because our behaviour affects others and can strengthen or weaken another person’s faith. There is nothing spiritual about behaving badly and then dismissing the consequences by saying, “I don’t care what people think.”

But there is an important distinction between character, reputation and image. Character is what we cultivate through our choices, behaviour and inner life. Reputation is what others come to understand about that character. Image is the version of ourselves that we want others to hold in their minds. Character is our responsibility; reputation deserves care because we live and serve in relationship with others; but image can never be entirely controlled.

Perhaps this is where Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s instruction amanina manadena—not demanding honour for oneself while offering honour to others—becomes much more profound than a general instruction to be humble. It asks whether our inner stability can survive being misunderstood.

It is easy to think we are detached from appreciation while we are being appreciated. It is only when we are criticised, misunderstood or unfairly represented that we discover how much of our peace depended upon being seen in a particular way.

This does not mean that we should never speak. Srivasa Thakura’s example should not be reduced to the idea that a devotee must silently tolerate false accusation. Sometimes truth must be stated clearly. But having done what is necessary, there comes a point when we have to accept that we cannot control how every person chooses to see us.

While we need to be responsible for our character and mindful of our reputation, we should also be clear that the image of us that exists in another person’s mind is ultimately not our concern. When someone misunderstands us, or deliberately distorts how others see us, the consequences may be painful and very real. But their perception of us is still not the reality of who we are.

And the same applies to praise. Neither criticism nor admiration determines who we are. Both belong to perception.

The deeper work of spiritual life is therefore not to win the battle of perception, but to know where our identity actually rests. Krishna describes the living being as His eternal part, and the Vaishnava understands the perfection of that identity in service. Beneath all the temporary identities we construct and defend is something that does not depend upon public opinion at all: I am Krishna’s servant.

Perhaps that is the real battle for identity. Not whether everyone eventually comes to see us correctly, but whether, through praise and blame, acceptance and rejection, being understood and being misunderstood, we can still remember who we actually are.
